Colour Mixing Ice Cream? Peakles and I are excited about this week’s book for the Virtual Book Club which is Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Williems. This is a new book for us and we all enjoyed reading it. We loved the dilemma that faces Gerland the Elephant when he buys his favourite ice cream and then has to decide whether to share with Piggie or not! Mixing Ice Cream Colours We thought that the story was lovely and wondered how they could share ice creams in the future. We talked about the different colours and flavours of ice cream that we both liked. We thought about what would happen if we mixed our favourites together. This then led to our basic colour mixing ideas based on friendship and ice cream too. Materials & Equipment yellow or brown paper pencils laminator pouches scissors coloured cellophane (blue, yellow and red at least) or tissue paper Making Your Ice Cream Scoops and Cones First, take each separate coloured cellophane or tissue paper and place inside a laminator pouch. Then, carefully laminate these (please make sure that youngsters are supervised) and leave to cool. Next, cut out the coloured laminate to make ‘scoops of ice cream. Once you have made the scoops, cut out some triangles from the yellow or brown paper for ice cream cones. Then, add some crossed lines to the triangle to make it look like a real ice cream cone. Colour Mixing Your Ice Creams We placed the ice cream ‘scoops’ on the cones and said which was our favourite one. We then talked about Gerald and Piggie sharing their ice creams and we then joined the ice creams together. Peakles discovered that new colours were created when you placed two different colours over each other. Red plus yellow made orange, blue plus yellow made green and blue plus red made purple! When we added all the colours together it made a really dark colour too! This activity is an excellent way to introduce colour mixing ideas as well as talking about sharing too! We loved reading the book again and doing this activity, which is a great way to introduce mathematical terms when describing 2D and 3D shapes to youngsters!
